AGLP Opera (by streaming) Discussion: The Hours
Sunday, April 28 , 2024 8:00-9:00pm ET/5:00-6:00pm PT
About 2 years ago we had AGLP zoom discussions of the novel and the film The Hours and now will continue our exploration of the story with a discussion of the opera version.
The Hours is a opera written by neo-romantic composer Kevin Puts premiered a year ago by the Metropolitan opera which is based on the Pulitzer prize winning novel by gay author Michael Cunningham. The film depicts three generations of women who are in dialogue with the classic novel Mrs. Dalloway, either directly or indirectly. Those women are struggling with their sense of identity and purpose, as well as their sexuality, either as lesbians or bisexuals. They are all dealing with the question of suicide, either their own or of someone they love.
The opera was so successful, it has been revived for this season, and there will be a performance of it during the APA meeting on Sunday May 5 from 3p-6p. Information for buying tickets for the opera is here (as well as information on how to get rush tickets). Metropolitan Opera | The Hours (metopera.org)
In the first thread of the opera, the author Virginia Woolf is writing Mrs. Dalloway itself in 1923 as she was struggling with her own mental illness. In the second, set in 1951, in Los Angeles, Mrs. Brown, the wife of a World War II veteran and a closeted lesbian, who is reading Mrs. Dalloway, is planning her husband's birthday party. In 2001 New York City, in the final narrative thread, Clarissa Vaughan, a lesbian literary agent is planning a party to celebrate a major literary award received by her good friend and former lover, a poet, Richard, who is dying of an AIDS. Richard has always fondly referred to her as Mrs. Dalloway
Please feel free to invite your friends/family to join our discussion.
